Remember the black and white wedding cake I posted earlier? I also had the pleasure of making their groom’s cake too! Apparently the groom LOVES bbq ribs, so the bride wanted a cake of a Weber grill with a rack of ribs that she surprised him with at the reception. Well, I had a real blast making this cake.
The grill is made out of a 12-inch round cake. I carved the center to make room for the fondant charcoal. The grill bars were tricky. It took me a loooong time to figure out a way to suspend the grill bars above the charcoal, yet not put any weight on the cake. After what seemed like an hour of considering my options, I had an a-ha moment. I ended up making the grill bars out of wooden dowels and gluing them to a support board that is hidden under the ribs. I supported this whole piece from underneath with dowels so that its weight is completely suspended and it didnt collapse the cake. Brilliant- if I do say so myself.
The grill lid and the rack of ribs are made out of krispy treats, and the ribs are slathered in colored piping gel to give the appearance of gooey bbq sauce. I love how this cake turned out, but I think my favorite part is the brush that I made out of gumpaste and more piping gel “sauce.”
